Hey Drummers! Welcome to Reggae For Drumset! In this brand-new series, we're diving deep into the most foundational and critical reggae beat: the One Drop. This first video, One Drop Hi-Hat Variation 1, kicks off our journey to master the different feels you can create by simply changing up your right hand on the hi-hat.

The One Drop groove, famously pioneered by Carlton Barrett of The Wailers, is all about feel, placement, and that crucial snare/kick hit on beat 3 (or 2 and 4, depending on how you count it!). However, the hi-hat is what gives the groove its authentic, shifting vibe.

To start, you'll learn the essential hi-hat rhythm for this variation, played solo on the drumset so you can focus 100% on the sticking and accents. Then, about halfway through the lesson, we'll introduce a bass and guitar accompaniment to help you understand exactly how this groove works in the context of a full reggae riddim. This is perfect for beginners looking to level up their reggae drumming and for intermediate players wanting to expand their groove vocabulary.
