More information about the video content bellow:
1. Daman and Diu is a union territory in Western India. With an area of 112 km2, it is the smallest federal division of India on the mainland. The territory comprises two distinct regions—Daman and Diu—that are geographically separated by the Gulf of Khambhat. A Portuguese colony since the 1500s, the territories were annexed by India in 1961.
2. For over 450 years, the coastal enclaves of Daman and Diu on the Arabian Sea coast were part of Portuguese India, along with Goa and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Daman was captured by foreign invaders in 1531 and formally took over in 1539. Portuguese took over Diu in 1535 by taking advantage of cold war between king and Mughal Emperor Humayu. Daman and Diu were fully under control of Portuguese in 1531 till 1961. Goa, Daman and Diu were incorporated into the Republic of India on December 19, 1961, by military conquest. Portugal did not recognise the Indian annexation of these territories until the Carnation Revolution of 1974.
3. The River Daman Ganga starts from Western Ghats and flows into the Arabian Sea. What people don’t know is that it is the most polluted river in India. The pollution of the river is due to different dye factories situated in Vapi which have made dirty waters flow instead of river water, and also killing the livestock and cattles.
4. Daman is the capital city of the Indian union territory of Daman and Diu. The Portuguese Diogo de Melo arrived at the spot by chance in 1523, when heading towards Ormuz. He was caught in a violent storm and had his boat blown towards the coast of Daman. Soon after, it was settled as a Portuguese colony which lasted for over 400 years.
5. Diu is a town in Diu district in the union territory of Daman and Diu, India. Due to its strategic importance, there was a Battle of Diu in 1509 between Portugal and a combined force of Ottomans, Mamluks, Venetians, the Ragusians, the Zamorin of Calicut, and the Sultan of Gujarat, Mahmud Begada. After this second siege, Diu was so fortified that it could withstand later attacks of the Arabs of Muscat and the Dutch in the late 17th century.
6. Daman boasts of a rich and varied cultural heritage, a blend of various Indian cultures and races, along with traces of its Portuguese past add to its multi – faceted identity. The Daman culture can thus be considered to be a fusion of Indian, tribal and European culture.
7. Daman will leave you spoilt for choices as there is no dearth of adventure and fun activities. The beach and proximity to water body promise a lot of adventure sports such as parasailing, water skiing, and other fun activities. Daman is home to many architectural marvels that will leave you craving for more.
