Every two years, during COP meetings, communities around the world raise awareness about the climate crisis through theater. In 2025, over 40 communities celebrated, performing several of 50 short plays, written by global playwrights. In Southcentral Alaska, one of the plays we chose was The Polar Bears, by Nic Billon. This short play is particularly effective, because it uses generous humor, and yet, within a few words, becomes heart-breakingly sober.

Almost as if climate change were looking for a metaphor for what we can expect out of life in a drastic climate changing world, every one of our four performances in Anchorage, Palmer and Talkeetna was fraught with last minute disaster. Our first performance found one of our performers stuck in Seattle on a flight canceled by the government shutdown. Our second found on of our other performer in the hospital. And other reason kept other performers from joining us in Palmer and Talkeetna. Thus, there were last minute casting changes, plays we weren't doing, we did do, based on who was there. It was chaos.
In The Polar Bears, you'll notice Jack holding a script, and even getting lost a few times. Thankfully, it wasn't Jack's first rodeo, getting his biggest laugh from milking the fact he was totally lost.
But, in all, the actors remained sillily professional, and despite being made aware of the scripts, the audiences marveled that they barely noticed, once the action started.
