The ego is often seen as the biggest obstacle to understanding ultimate reality, which is the true nature of things. The ego is the idea of self, the sense of "me" that we all have. It is the sense of self that we identify with and it creates a sense of separation between ourselves and the world.

In Buddhism, the ego is considered as a delusion that keeps us from understanding ultimate reality. The ego creates a false sense of permanence and self-importance, which leads to attachment and suffering.

The ego resists ultimate reality because it is based on the idea that things are permanent and that we are separate from the rest of the world. Ultimate reality, however, teaches us that all things are impermanent and that everything is interconnected.
