She was first diagnosed with scoliosis around the age of nine. That’s when doctors recommended starting treatment. However, little was done until she turned twelve. By that time, her spinal curve had progressed into the 40-degree range.
Regardless of the type of scoliosis, the most significant risk factor for progression is rapid growth. Since puberty brings the most accelerated growth phase, it's the time when scoliosis typically worsens. However, it’s not just about timing—it also depends on how severe the curve is at the start of puberty. The greater the curve entering that stage, the more likely it is to progress. Because of this, the goal is always to reduce the curve as much as possible before puberty begins, lowering the risk of worsening.
At one point, it seemed like surgery might be necessary. She was strongly against that option. When she arrived at the treatment center, she hoped something would work to help her avoid surgery. During the first round of treatment, she experienced a significant reduction—six degrees in the first week and another six degrees in the second week.
As a young child, scoliosis didn’t impact her daily life. But by age twelve, things changed. From that point on, wearing a brace became part of her everyday routine. Currently, she wears it about 21 hours a day, but at first, she had to wear it for 23 hours daily for two straight years. That was a major adjustment, especially with school, sports, and normal activities.
Corrective bracing, helps not only to hold the spine in place but also to actively remodel the torso. In her case, it worked as a tool for actual curve reduction. What makes this type of treatment unique is that it can be used across all age groups—before, during, and after growth. When combined with other therapies, it becomes a powerful approach to reducing spinal curvature.
After a successful reduction in her curve, she returned to her orthopedic surgeon, who told her that her curvature had dropped below 25 degrees and that she no longer needed to wear the brace. But she and her family chose to continue. They understood the value of keeping consistent pressure on the spine—not just to prevent further progression, but to keep improving the curve as much as possible before adulthood.
The treatment itself was not painful. Many of the machines were actually relaxing. She could sit, watch TV, and even fall asleep during some sessions. One of the best parts of her journey was meeting others from around the world—even people from as far away as Dubai. Everyone she met was kind, supportive, and welcoming, making the experience all the more positive.
