Disneyland Park, originally known as Disneyland, represents the inaugural theme park within the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California. It officially debuted its doors to the public on July 17, 1955, and is distinctive for being the sole theme park created under the direct guidance of Walt Disney himself. Initially, it was a solitary attraction on the premises, but its name was modified to Disneyland Park to distinguish it from the expanding complex in the 1990s.
The idea for Disneyland germinated in Walt Disney's mind after he visited various amusement parks alongside his daughters during the 1930s and 1940s. Initially, he envisioned constructing a tourist attraction near his studios in Burbank to entertain fans who wished to visit. However, he soon recognized that the proposed location was too confined. After enlisting the aid of a consultant to identify a suitable site for his venture, Walt purchased a 160-acre (65 ha) parcel of land near Anaheim in 1953. Construction commenced in 1954, culminating in the park's grand unveiling during a televised press event on the ABC Television Network on July 17, 1955.
Since its inception, Disneyland has undergone multiple expansions and significant overhauls, incorporating the addition of New Orleans Square in 1966, Bear Country (now Critter Country) in 1972, and Mickey's Toontown in 1993. In 2001, Disney California Adventure Park materialized where Disneyland's original parking lot once stood.
Disneyland boasts a larger cumulative attendance than any other theme park globally, with over 650 million visitors since its inauguration. In 2013 the park hosted approximately 16.2 million guests, making it the third most visited park globally. According to a March 2005 report from the Disney Company, the Disneyland Resort sustains 65,700 jobs, encompassing around 20,000 Disney employees and 3,800 third-party employees, including independent contractors and their staff.
As of October 28, 2023: Announcements at the Disneyland Resort will undergo a notable transformation shortly, as the long-serving announcers of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park, Bill Rogers and Camille Dixon, are set to step down from their roles. This husband-and-wife team will be concluding their remarkable tenures of 32 and 11 years, respectively, due to "casting changes at the Disneyland Resort." The precise departure date has not been disclosed as of now.
