Superintendent Jason Bing conducted an online discussion on The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt, which brought together teachers, parents, and community members to talk about how smartphones are changing childhood. Families shared real-life tips like creating phone-free times at dinner or turning off screens at night. They talked about how too much screen time can lead to stress, lack of sleep, and trouble paying attention. Many agreed it’s important to help kids reconnect with real-life experiences: playing outside, having face-to-face conversations, and just being kids again.

The School District of South Orange & Maplewood proudly serves around 7,000 students across ten schools, including one early childhood center, six elementary schools, two middle schools, and Columbia High School – New Jersey's first high school. The district creates a learner-centered environment that offers multiple pathways for academic success through reimagined structures, support, and innovative instructional methods for all students.
