In this video, I’m unpacking how the plant boom, rare aroids, variegation hype, and social media algorithms subtly rewired our expectations. Not in an angry way. Not in a “trends are bad” way. Just honestly.

Because something shifted.

We went from measuring success in years…
To measuring it in leaf size.
Variegation percentage.
Follower counts.
Perfection.

During the rare plant era, everything needed to be bigger, rarer, more dramatic. Mature leaves were all we saw. Setbacks weren’t shown. Juvenile forms felt like failures. And the algorithm? It amplified only what looked impressive.

But biologically, that’s not how plants work.

Thriving doesn’t mean spectacle.
It doesn’t mean instant maturity.
It doesn’t mean your Philodendron looks like it was grown in a tropical greenhouse in Florida when you’re growing it in a flat in the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, or the US.

It might just mean stability.
Consistency.
Survival through winter.
A new leaf, even if it’s smaller than you hoped.

This is a grounded, reflective conversation about reclaiming the hobby. About remembering why we brought plants into our homes in the first place. And about releasing the quiet pressure to perform.
