The Mk 38 (based on the M242 Bushmaster) is an externally powered 25 mm (25×137 mm) weapon system for close-in ship defense. Consisting of an M242 chain gun and a Mk 88 Mod 0 mount, the Mk 38 replaced the 20 mm MK 16 system and was later upgraded to the Mod 1 variant. It can fire semi-automatically, continuously, or fully automatically, using metal-linked belts with dual-feed capability. “Chain gun” refers to the drive chain that moves the bolt; the standard rate of fire is about 200 rounds per minute, with an effective range of up to approximately 3,000 meters depending on ammunition—effective against patrol boats, floating mines, and coastal targets.
