Hello. My name is Brandon Gravett and I am a GIS analyst with Dewberry. Today, I will be discussing computer-simulated 3D fly-throughs. So what is a 3D fly-through? Well, it's a terrain visualization technique where the 3D model of the terrain continuously changes relative to the location of the viewer who appears to be flying over the terrain in an aircraft. One can take the model of the terrain and add digital imagery, enhanced smoke or clouds, or they can add virtual features that depict objects or landmarks that are of unique importance to a specific fly-through.

Fly-throughs are great at noting the before and after for areas that have been impacted by hurricanes, landslides, or wildfires. Another overlooked benefit of 3D fly-throughs come into play with the bidding process for infrastructure projects. They typically lead to higher technical scores for proposals. They can also help the project manager better scope out their plans. And finally, the 3D fly-through is very useful in showcasing the expertise of the consultant concerning a site location.
