In 1993 Spikes went from a perfect safety record. While the older heavier systems had cords, and were in fact safer, they were abandoned and the old standards lost forever. Understanding this history, is important to the design and training of future vehicle stopping technologies.
Many Sheriffs, Police Chiefs, State Patrol Leaders, abandoned these old tactics, and actually endorsed the new products! The winder and cord reels of older systems were declared dangerous, by risk management insurance companies. It sold a lot of Spikes, but placed officers at risk. What can we learn from the past? I have been training officers in the use of Spikes since 1987, I have traveled world wide and provided support on the use of tire deflators.
