In quarter 4 of 2023, 420 MW of new battery energy storage became commercially operational in Great Britain. This meant total grid scale battery energy storage capacity in Great Britain was 3.5 GW at the end of 2023 with an energy capacity of 4.6 GWh.

At the start of the quarter, there was over 1 GW of battery capacity in the pipeline due to come online by year end. However, trends in build out throughout 2023 meant we expected to only see between 250 to 500 MW of this.

In the end, the build out was much closer to the top end of this range, suggesting the industry is working through some of the delays that had affected 2 This new capacity comes from 8 sites. This includes the 99 MW sites Richborough Energy Park and Bumpers.

Once again, new build capacity was dominated by batteries with a duration of 2 hours. With 65% of newly operational power coming from two-hour systems. This means the average duration of grid scale battery energy storage in Great Britain increased to 1.3 hours by the end of 2023. Looking ahead, in Q1 of 2024, 800 MW of battery energy storage capacity in the pipeline is expected to begin commercial operation.

However, based on the rate of build out from 2023, 400 to 600 MW is much more likely.

This would take total operational battery capacity to 4 GW.
