Sweden's National Day celebrations are just finished for 2025, and I decided to dig into the why and the how of the National Day. Why is June 6 celebrated? And what historical events led to this day being selected?

This is a video that dives into events in 1916, when Sweden's Flag Day was established. Before 1983 Sweden didn't have a National Day - it just had an innoficial day called the Swedish Flag Day. And that all got started because of a wholesaler's petition to the king. But the rabbit hole goes deeper than that.

Ever since 1893 there's been a celebration at Skansen on June 6, honoring the 1809 constitution that was signed by King Karl XII on June 6. But that's just one of the reasons - the other is that King Gustav Vasa was coronated on June 6, 1523, after liberating Sweden from the tyrannical rule of the Danes during the Kalmar Union.

Or... Is that actually what happened? There's a lot of debate what exactly took place in the years between 1520 and 1523, and just how much truth there is to the historical stories about Gustav Eriksson, who later became Gustav Vasa.

But in the end, he's still the hero we primarily celebrate on June 6. He was a bit of a despot, and a bit of a bastard - but he was OUR bastard-hero of a king!
