2024 Toilet Day: UNICEF Decries Destruction Of Toilets, Washing Facilities During Borno Flood

The United Nations Children's Fund has decried the destruction of toilet and washing facilities following the devastating flood in Maiduguri and some LGs in Borno state.

It stated this during its commemoration of the 2924 World Toilet Day in Maiduguri.

UNICEF feared that the destruction will increase open defecation which may harm public health, slow productivity, impede school attendance and affect quality of life.

UNICEF's WASH Manager Mamita Thakkar said only 53% have access to basic toilet leaving the rest of the population exposed to unsafely disposed excreta, cholera and other water-borne diseases.

She commended the Borno state government’s action on sanitation and environmental sustainability saying it hopes for more rapid response and policy decisions to end open defecation in the state.
