Growing mounds of plastic waste in landfill sites are one of the world’s biggest environmental challenges.

At CDE, researchers led by Assoc Prof Raymond Ong (Civil and Environmental Engineering) are looking at ways to recycle plastic waste to develop new types of road surfaces.

Working with a range of waste plastics from both household and industrial sources, the researchers are focusing on bituminous pavement surfaces, aiming to develop optimal specifications for road surfaces with structural integrity, functionality, safety, urban cooling, noise reduction, and environmental performance.

Eventually they hope this will lead to a practical framework for a plastic circular economy within the road-building industry.

By re-imagining plastic waste as a resource, this innovative research aims to transform our approach to construction and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.
