This film is about the author of ‘To India – My Native Land’ and ‘The Fakeer of Jungheera’ - Henry Louis Vivian Derozio (1809-1831). The importance of the poet-teacher-mentor and social reformer Derozio and the Young Bengal Movement lies in their significant role in the early 19th-century social and intellectual awakening in colonial India, particularly in Bengal. He was one of the Pioneers of the Indian Renaissance. As a teacher at Hindu College (Calcutta), he inspired a group of radical and reform-minded students in the 1820s–30s who came to be known as the Young Bengal. They were seen as early torchbearers of the Bengal Renaissance, a period of progressive cultural, social, and intellectual reform. He promoted rational thinking and scientific temper, which made his followers challenge traditional customs, superstition, and orthodoxy. The prevalent casteism and the subjugation of women were under attack. They supported women’s education and opposed practices like sati and child marriage. The group’s critique of British rule and support for liberty, freedom of speech, and democratic ideals influenced later nationalist thinkers. Their ideals were Voltaire, Thomas Paine, and Rousseau. The movement helped lay the foundation for modern secular education in India. His movement later inspired reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, and others who carried forward the work of social change.

This brilliant docu-drama of Sanat Dasgupta featured the well-known filmmaker Gautam Ghosh as an anchor and Jagannath Guha as a reciter. More importantly, it featured many experts from Bengal during the period when Raja Rammohan and Vidyasagar had yet to emerge as social reformers. Anyone who watches this film would realise how difficult it must have been to write the script and direct a film with description, narration, recitation and acting to project a brilliant mind who lived for only 22 years but made a great impact.
