This time we take a look at what the Roman soldiers stationed at forts and fortresses were actually doing. A lot of this comes from texts written on papyrus, pottery shards (ostraka) or wooden tablets that give glimpses of the lives of Roman soldiers on a day to day basis.

So what was the life of a Roman soldier like when it came to formal duty? Were they in or around the base all the time, training and preparing for war? What else were they doing? Who garrisoned the smaller fortlets, the watchtowers and the milecasteles and turrets of structures like Hadrian's Wall. In essence, what was the Roman army doing most of the time, both as individual soldiers, as formal units and as other groups? This is important for our understanding of the Roman army and of how Roman frontiers worked. There is danger that we plot the sites of army bases on a map and assume that there was something important about each specific site that required a military presence.
