Would you like the perfect starter worm bin? Well, I have found what I think is a perfect worm bin for beginners.

I'm going to show you the worm bin. I'm going to tell you why I think it's a perfect starter worm bin.

And better yet, I'm going to show you how you can make it yourself. It's cheap. It's easy. And, you can do it yourself.

Okay, the perfect starter worm bin. Those are kind of big words. We all know that nothing is perfect. Right? Well, what makes a perfect starter worm bin?

The first thing we need is: It should be relatively inexpensive.

Secondly, the worm bin should be fairly easy to manage and large enough to hold a fair amount of worms.

The third requirement is: The worm bin should keep the composting worms at home. (Even when you make a mistake)

Ziploc makes the perfect starter worm bin. They don't know it yet but I do. It is the 26.5 qt. Weathershield Storage Box in black.

Ziploc makes this Weathershield Storage Box in "clear" and "black". We definitely want the black one because worms don't like the light.

So, what makes this a perfect worm bin? I mean it's 14" by 18" long by 6 in deep. Nothing special there!

You could just use a mortar tray, 10 gal. tote, or something similar instead. What is it that makes this Ziploc Weathershield Box so special?

Well, I think what makes this the perfect worm bin is the lid. More specifically, the foam seal in the lid.

The reason why is because of this foam seal. When you lock it down the worms can't get out.

I modify the lid portion so that the worm bin gets good airflow. I cut the center section out and when I get done it's going to look like this.

I can put this on the worm bin and we will have good airflow. You don't have to drill any holes in the box or anything like that.

The worm bin will get plenty of air flow through the top. Better yet, your worms can't get out because of the foam seal.

So, how are we going to make this? I'll show you how we cut out the center out of the worm bin.

We are going to drill four holes in these corners and then I'm going to cut the center 12 sections out with the jigsaw.

We're just going to cut the center section out. We want to leave this outside section with the foam seal.

You can see that it still has good integrity so we can put it back on the worm bin. The worms won't be able to get out.

We drill four holes...one in each corner as shown. This is just to allow us to get our jigsaw blade in there to make the cuts.

Take the handy jigsaw and just cut hole to hole until we have the center cut out. Stay inside the ribs as shown.

Once we have the center portion of the lid cut out, we can take a sanding block and knock off any loose pieces or sharp edges.

There you go. We're all set to take the worm bin and fill it with bedding. Get the moisture right in your worm bedding and add your worms.

Drop your worms on top and let them go down on their own. I like to cover them with a four-sheet thickness of a newspaper that I've wet.

Put your modified cover on and lock the clamps. You now have a completed perfect starter worm bin.
