DMAE in Skincare- Ingredient Spotlight

DMAE is available topically and orally. Controversial ingredient, need to do your own research and come to your own conclusion on if you want to use this ingredient!

Some research shows this will help to tighten up and firm skin

Other Research shows that this ingredient might end up killing cells if used too often. I would love to see more independent, long term in vivo studies on the safety and efficacy of this before committing to using this ingredient. Some people instantly notice a benefit and firming of sagging skin, while others used products for 3-4 months and noticed no benefits at all.

Perricone tends to use this ingredient in many of their products.

“Negative” Research on DMAE:

These studies basically state that,
“The researchers found that adding DMAE to the cultures of fibroblasts (key type of skin cells) produced the effect known as vacuolization. Vacuolization is often observed in cells after various types of damage as cells try to encapsulate and excrete foreign agents and/or their own damaged components. Hence the researches concluded that the vacuolization induced by DMAE was suggestive of cell damage. They also observed that DMAE impaired the ability of fibroblasts to divide. Notably, the above adverse effects reversed after DMAE had been washed out of the culture following a short-term exposure. (Long-term exposure has not been studied.)

The application of 3% DMAE to the skin of rabbit ear resulted in the thickening of epidermis and the so-called perinuclear swelling (swelling of the area around the nucleus) in epidermal cells. This effect was an indirect indication (albeit not a proof) of vacuolization and cell damage.”

These studies state that DMAE is safe and effective for use on wrinkles and skin thickness. Stating that 3% DMAE facial gel applied daily for 16 weeks has been shown to be safe and efficacious (p greater than 0.05) in the mitigation of forehead lines and periorbital fine wrinkles, and in improving lip shape and fullness and the overall appearance of aging. They also state that DMAE helped collagen fiber thickness and increased dermal thickness. AT this point research shows in human studies that DMAE is safe to use up to and through one year.
