What do you do if you are interacting with someone who is behaving aggressively or unpleasantly?

The first step is to notice if their behaviour is triggering you, or can you hold their energy briefly?

By avoiding becoming upset you gain the power to choose your response rather than just reacting.


Sometimes, simply acknowledging someone by listening to them with curiosity (not agreeing or disagreeing with them) provides a useful way to see if their negative energy will diminish by simply giving it air.
However, this type of connection requires a lot of your own energy to stay grounded. I therefore suggest that once you decide you no longer wish to continue the interaction, you simply interrupt and say you have to go.
An obvious approach is to say you are now running late for an appointment; or say you need to go to the toilet. The key point is you do not need to feel trapped and you have the right to leave immediately.
When someone is behaving in an unpleasant way and they are angry; creating a boundary is best done by simply removing yourself from the situation, rather than giving them a 'life lesson' at that time.
At the same time, problems do need to be addressed, and can't be postponed indefinitely. My view is it is best to avoid addressing them when you are dealing with someone who is in a highly agitated state - wait, but do address it if needed.
A simple maxim I use is within 24 hours.
