TOKYO — Japan’s NTT DoCoMo and GE Energy Japan announced on Wednesday they plan to form a business alliance to provide an Internet of Things solution for infrastructure management.

Communications modules will be installed on infrastructure such as roads and bridges to collect real-time data on vibration levels, temperature and other variables. The data will be stored on a cloud platform for users to access information via smartphones and tablets.

The system allows users to easily monitor how variables such as erosion and damage affect a building. As the infrastructure ages, it becomes more expensive to maintain.

Online inspection and damage prediction can lower the cost of such maintenance.
In spring of 2016, the software will be sold to customers including corporations and local government institutions.
