Building Back Better: An International Workshop

The winter workshop “Building Back Better: An International Workshop exploring solutions for the sustainable rebuilding of Ukraine” brought together an international community of students and professors to work in design studios in Lviv and Warsaw, exploring the possibilities of rethinking the built environment to rebuild communities and cities.

The winter workshop focused on the city of Dnipro and the Dnipro River basin, namely on the districts, spaces, and ecology within them. The workshop participants jointly identified and presented strategies for designing housing and urban spaces, taking into account the potential of zero-carbon design, and proposed new models of architecture and urbanism for communities in the process of rebuilding or facing deteriorating climate conditions.

For two weeks, their shared goal was to help Ukrainian students develop a vision for their own future, with a special focus on the city of Dnipro and the Dnipro River Basin. The initiative, which included more than 33 lectures and discussions, aimed to address the country's urgent need for innovative, forward-thinking and sustainable solutions for reconstruction.

For the Kharkiv School of Architecture, the workshop was key in establishing connections that will enable the launch of Ukraine's first independent master's program in architecture and urban design for post-war reconstruction.
