Congratulations to Two Time Emmy Winner Alan Muraoka, who is being inducted into the Children & Family Emmy's Silver Circle at Jazz at Lincoln Center for his 27 years on Sesame Street as performer, director and producer. My favorite collaboration of the year is with Alan at The Met’s Annual Lunar New Year Festival with Muppeteers Jennifer Barnhart and Kathleen Kim.
On this segment of Backstage Pass with Lia Chang, I’m shining the spotlight on Telly Leung, who is currently starring as one of six Phantoms in Masquerade, the new Phantom of the Opera experience created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Diane Paulus, and produced by my friend and colleague, Randy Weiner.
Telly is a Chinese-American performer, recording artist, director, producer & performing arts teacher. I’ve know Telly since he made his Broadway debut in the ensemble of the David Henry Hwang’s revisal of Flower Drum Song. He is best known for his performances on Broadway in Aladdin, In Transit, Allegiance, Rent and Pacific Overtures.
Telly Leung and Haile Ferrier are magnificent as The Phantom and Christine in masquerade. It was exquisite to see them both shine along with their castmates in such an immersive and intimate performance. Telly is only the 2nd Asian American to play The Phantom. Here is Telly’s acoustic version of Music of the Night, accompanied by Will Shishmanian on guitar.
Thank you to my collaborator Jason Ma for taking me to Masquerade, the Phantom of the Opera experience which takes place at 218 W. 57th St (formerly Lee’s Art Shop). The dress code includes formally festive in black, white or silver and a mask. Upon entering, attendees are given champagne or a non alcoholic beverage, are taught choreography by Madame Giry, and some are drink champagne, linvited to dance by the performers (I did all of the above).
Masquerade blurs the lines of reality, bringing audiences inside and closer than ever before to the strange affair of The Phantom of the Opera – a mystery never fully explained. From the highest rooftop to the subterranean lair deep below the Opera Populaire, guests are invited to experience the music of the night more intimately than ever before.
