Keith was born in New York City’s Harlem on July 22, 1961. His father Charles, a factory worker, died in 1973. After that, his mother Juanita, a hairdresser, was forced to raise their 5 children alone. He began performing at the age of 14, honing his craft as a lead singer of a funk band called Jamilah.
