The old world has many beautiful old words, and what a beautiful French word for the subject we are discussing now.

ROGNAGE, comes from rodné or rooignier from the old French or from the popular Latin "retundiare" or "rotundiare" (= round cut), derived from rotundus (round)

ROGNAGE, an important part of modern canopy management and is a mandatory work in the vineyard. The correct moment of this is an underestimated parameter for many wine makers, but it is very important for a proper yield with the desired sugar levels in the grapes.
When performing these activities, the end goal (desired harvest results) must be the priority.
A bad wine maker waits for the harvest result. A good wine maker works towards its harvest result.

ROGNAGE: topping of the vines..
A. The topping during flowering results in an increase in yield.
B. The topping at the end of the cell division phase (in the 1st 3 weeks after flowering, I explained that already to our visiting vineyard owners) reduces the yield and the grape compactness.

ROGNAGE:
The following goals must be kept in mind by a vineyard keeper:
A. For a higher yield he’s topping at an early stage and tries to delay the second higher topping as long as possible.
B. For higher quality, he tops the first time as late and as low as possible; This causes a reduction of sugar production and the berries remain smaller and it reduces the chance of botritis, (grape rot).
His second toppping will then be executed as late as possible so that the missing sugars can be extracted optimally.
