JAMAICA HAS A BOBSLED TEAM AND I’M CRYING WITH JOY
Cool Runnings (1993) is one of those rare sports comedies that manages to be both ridiculously funny and genuinely inspiring. Loosely based on the true story of the Jamaican bobsled team’s unlikely journey to the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, it takes a premise that could’ve been a one-note gag and turns it into a feel-good underdog classic that still lands 30 years later.
At the heart of it is John Candy, in one of his final roles, playing disgraced American coach Irv Blitzer. Candy brings his signature warmth and sharp comic timing, grounding the film with just enough seriousness to make the inspirational beats work. He’s matched by the four Jamaican athletes—Leon (Derice), Doug E. Doug (Sanka), Rawle D. Lewis (Junior), and Malik Yoba (Yul)—each with their own quirks, insecurities, and arcs. Doug E. Doug’s Sanka, in particular, is pure scene-stealing energy; his “Sanka, ya dead?” running gag is burned into pop-culture history.
The film leans hard into fish-out-of-water comedy—Jamaican athletes trying to train on a tropical island for a sport that requires ice, then bumbling their way through the frosty skepticism of Olympic competitors. But what makes it click is how it never loses sight of the heart: these guys want respect, not just medals. The training montages are goofy, but the payoff—the crash, the refusal to quit, and the team carrying their sled across the finish line—is iconic sports movie magic.
Yes, it takes massive liberties with the true story. The real Jamaican team didn’t face the same cartoonish racism, and their Olympic journey was less slapstick and more straight-up impressive. But as a piece of cinema, Cool Runnings nails that Disney formula: big laughs, big heart, and a story you can’t help but root for.
It’s quotable. It’s warm. It’s funny. And even when it’s predictable, you still get chills watching those final minutes. Cool Runnings is the rare family comedy that earns its place as both comfort watch and cult classic.
