Countries With Most Terrorist Attacks Since 1970

Terrorism is defined in the Oxford Dictionary as “the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims.”

It could be hard to distinguish between acts of terrorism and other acts of violence such as hate crimes, homicides, state armed conflicts... which is why we took a look at some of the criteria that constitute acts of terrorism.

The criteria of terrorism:

According to Global Terrorism Database, acts of terrorism are acts of violence by non-state actors, perpetrated against civilian populations, intended to cause fear, in order to achieve a political objective.

This definition excludes violence initiated by states and open combat between armed forces.

Overall, harm which was done by targetting noncombatant, neutral, or randomly chosen people is usually a sign of terrorism.

The following animated chart shows you countries with the most terrorist attacks since 1970. The data found in the chart includes recent terrorist attacks per year, with the countries with the most terrorist attacks ranking on top.

As you can see, terrorism is often regionally-focused. And often, countries with the highest terrorism rates tends to be in countries with high levels of internal conflict.
