"How Could He Hurt You" was one of The Temptations hit singles from their latest album at the time "Phoenix Rising." The song would reach #1 on the Urban Adult Contemporary chart and became a top five hit. It was the first song to feature their newest lead singer at the time, Barrington "Bo" Henderson, who replaced Theo Peoples shortly before the albums release. It would also be the first to feature Terry Weeks, who has now been in the group for almost 30 years. The album would become their very first platinum record after many releases over the year.

The music video also features Charles Malik Whitfield and Christian Payton, who both portrayed Otis Williams and the late Paul Williams in the 1998 miniseries "The Temptations."
