In honor of Black History Month our virtual deTour took us to Camp Nelson. Recently designated as a National Monument by the Department of the Interior for its historical significance, Camp Nelson was initially established as a Union Army supply depot and hospital during the Civil War. However, it would become a key emancipation site and a refugee camp for African American soldiers and their families.

The Blue Grass Trust for Historic Preservation is honored to help share Camp Nelson's story, which represents courage and determination in the name of securing freedom while also illustrating the nation’s struggle to define the meaning of freedom during and after the Civil War
