Thank you so much for taking interest in this video. This was done over the course of a week with my best friend, Adam Dell / Redrock90. We had some extra time on our hands and with Resident Evil 3 coming out in 5 days, we decided to revisit one of our favorites.

In this Resident Evil 5 play through we decided to attempt a No Merchant run. What is a no merchant run? The term originated in Resident Evil 4, where players would play through the entire story without purchasing items from the Merchant that shows up periodically. In Resident Evil 5 there’s a way to perform this without the actual presence of a merchant / vendor.

In between missions and at the main menu there’s a screen called ITEM MANAGEMENT. This allows you to upgrade your weapons, purchase new weapons, buy health, ammo, explosives, and it gives you the option to store items for later. It’s a combination of the Merchant from RE4 and the Item Box from the older games. In the No Merchant run of RE5, we will only be allowed to select READY.

We cannot buy any new weapons, cannot upgrade the weapons we find, and cannot store an item for future use. In short, we must pretend that screen doesn’t exist at all. We can only find items in the story and we must share the 18 item spaces between the both of us. That sounds like a lot, but it isn’t. It fills up quickly.

Playing in split screen gives us the option of swapping items between one another more easily, so that’s helpful. We also could discard unwanted items or firearms.

We’re playing on VETERAN as opposed to PROFFESIONAL. This is due to the Professional difficulty being a unique challenge on its own, and usually one that’s played with unlimited rockets or magnums. Simply put, it wouldn’t have been fun. The only difference between the two is that Professional makes enemies kill you nearly instantly unless your partner is standing by to heal you immediately. Veteran is challenging and you don’t die in 1 hit, usually 2 or 3. Nevertheless, the choice to play on Veteran was made.
