The wavelengths of light that are most effective for photosynthesis are in the blue-violet and red-orange parts of the light spectrum. This is because the primary photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b, absorb these wavelengths most strongly.

The Role of Chlorophyll
Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria convert light energy into chemical energy. This process is driven by pigments that absorb specific wavelengths of light.

Chlorophyll a and b are the most abundant pigments and are crucial for photosynthesis. They absorb light most efficiently in the blue-violet range (around 430-470 nm) and the red-orange range (around 660-680 nm). They reflect green light, which is why plants appear green to our eyes.

Accessory pigments, such as carotenoids, absorb wavelengths that chlorophyll cannot, particularly in the blue-green range. They then transfer this energy to chlorophyll, broadening the range of light that can be used for photosynthesis.

An action spectrum shows the rate of a physiological activity (like photosynthesis) plotted against wavelength. The action spectrum for photosynthesis closely mirrors the absorption spectra of chlorophyll a and b, with peaks in the blue and red regions and a dip in the green region. This demonstrates that these are the most effective wavelengths for driving the process.
