Jadavpur University CCTV Debate: “Right to smoke & drink inside campus,” say students | NTT

Jadavpur University is caught in the CCTV debate post the unfortunate death of a first-year minor. There aren’t any CCTV inside the hostel where the minor had a fatal fall, was allegedly ragged to death. There aren’t any CCTV either inside the University campus, in clear violation of the UGC guidelines. Students claim that CCTV could lead to surveillance, infringing on their right to freedom and privacy. The death of the minor has also exposed the lapses and wrongs inside the Jadavpur University campus. NTT expose showed how alcohol bottles were found at several spots inside the campus, indicative of gross indiscipline. Dismissive of such an expose, the students remain defiant and oppose CCTVs be installed inside the campus. Students have justified drinking inside campus. They say “Since the university campus is like a second home, thus it’s okay to drink and smoke inside the campus”. They don’t call it brazenness but suggest it’s their right to freedom.
