Howdy ya’ll. Today we will look at some of the oldest photographs of Samara, Russia, including some of the first images of The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour (which was demolished in 1932), as well as The Samara Valve Factory, which was founded on the exact location of the ruins of the massive Samara Castle.

The immense fortifications of the once glorious Samara Castle included multiple sets of earthworks, and the foundations of the castle seem to predate written history. Parts of the castle’s foundations appeared to still be present in some of the images from the 19th century, even if the castle was said to have fallen during two great fires in 1690, and 1703, respectively.

Samara was a heavily fortified city, beginning with Scythian occupation, and flourishing under The Golden Horde. Yet by the time of modern Russian history, it appears Samara was one of the cities altered the most by significant revolutions, cataclysms, and overall changes which reshaped the historical narrative. Today, we will examine the oldest photographs of Samara from the 19th century.
