5 Facts About Doing a PhD in Netherlands 🇳🇱 They Don’t Tell You 👇

1️⃣ Working hours:
PhD researcher in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 usually work 38 hours a week. Flexible schedules are common, but full-time really means full-time.

2️⃣ Funding:
You get a monthly salary. It starts around €2,700–€3,000 in the first year and can rise to €3,700 by year four. Plus: 8% holiday allowance + 8.3% year-end bonus = extra cash twice a year 💶

3️⃣ Contracts:
Most PhDs are on a 4-year employment contract. Sometimes you get an initial 1-year trial period that’s extended to four once things go well. You even build up pension rights during this time.

4️⃣ Vacation:
You’re entitled to roughly 30 paid vacation days per year, on top of public holidays. You can even “save” or “buy” extra days through flexible HR schemes 🏖️

5️⃣ Tax benefits:
If you’re moving from abroad, you might qualify for the 30% ruling, meaning 30% of your salary is tax-free for up to 5 years. A huge help with rent in Amsterdam or Delft!
