The upcoming playstation 4 games console will be using the AMD Jaguar APU, which uses an 8 core CPU along with 18 GCN cores. GCN cores are AMD's next generation graphics technology. Graphics Core Next are capable of doing a lot more than producing pretty visuals on screen.

GCN (Graphics Core Next) features on the PC with various cards based on the AMD Radeon Southern Island Graphics Cards - AKA the AMD Radeon 7000 series. For example the AMd Radeon 7970.

The PS4 contains 18 GCN cores (rumour puts 12 in the Xbox 720) and the Radeon 7970 on the PC contain 32 GCN cores. These cores are the latest advancement from AMD in parallel computing, with the purpose of the cores to move from the older designs into a more compute friendly word.

The playstation 4 and Xbox 720 games systems will heavily rely upon the GCN cores for a number of tasks that would be traditionally farmed off to the CPU, when in many cases next generation graphics card are able to perform the tasks much more effectively. The PS4 contains about 1,84TFLOPS of computing power from its GCN cores.

With the advent of GCN cores, AMD are allowing developers far better access to the functionality of the graphics chip - which allows for far easier programming and compiling. More over, it allows more complicated instructions to be issued a lot easier, and far better FP64 support.

The GCN design abandons the VLIW5 and VLIW4 of previous designs, and focuses on a different form of parallel computing.
