Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) means investing in companies that meet a certain threshold of social responsibility. SRI takes into consideration environmental impact as well as social and governance concerns. SRI has become an incredibly popular way to invest, growing tenfold over the past 20 years—there are now $22 trillion in assets worldwide in SRI funds. In Canada alone, SRI accounts for 30% of all financial assets.

Wealthsimple launched its Socially Responsible Investing portfolio consisting of carefully selected ETFs in March 2016 which has yielded an average annualized return of 6.7%. That said, they just made some changes to the Socially Responsible Investing portfolio that lowers the cost, gives investors better diversification, provides better screening for companies with corporate social responsibility alignments and improves the screens for socially responsible values. The dividend yield (trailing 12 months) of this portfolio is 1.89%.

Here's a little about what they did and why:
Wealthsimple replaced the equity funds with two new Wealthsimple ETFs: WSRI, which holds North American companies, and WSRD, which holds companies in Europe, Australia and Asia.
The new ETFs reduce the cost of portfolio. The management expense ratio of the equity funds in the old portfolio was 0.48% — we’ve cut it by more than half, to 0.23%.
Wealthsimple improved the values screening. Most SRI funds pick the "least bad" companies in problematic industries like oil and firearms. Wealthsimple removed them entirely. Their ETFs also eliminate the top 25% carbon-emitters in each industry — so the funds have a lower carbon footprint without compromising diversification and better supporting ethical investing and doing the right thing.
