This is the Candy SA7 (SuperAtuomatic 7) of the 1967. In the middle of the 60s Candy found that the market was missing of a washer suitable for big families with more than 5 people and that the only option for them would have been buying an expensive professional washing machine which most of them couldn’t afford. Apart from the high purchasing costs, the other problem would have been the need for a 3Phase power supply along with the double hot and cold water tap connection to install the typical professional 7kg machine of the time, and since cold tap water only connection was and still is common use in the European countries, especially in Italy, where all washing machines have always been equipped with the water heater, this was an even bigger problem. From that they came out with a new concept washing machine conceived to fill the gap between the classic home washer and the first level professional washing machine. It had the load capacity of a professional washing machine but designed to be installed in any ordinary home environment, using the ordinary power and water supply available in the average family home. The semiprofessional Superautomatic 7 was born! The SA7 had the classic 10 program cycles of any other Candy washer of the time: program 1 for heavy soiled resistant laundry; program 2 for normal whites; program 3 for light soiled whites; program 4 for resistant colors; program 5 for dark colors; program 6 additional rinse or additional prewash; program 7 spin cycle for resistant laundry; program 8 permanent press; program 9 mix fibers and program 10 delicates and wool. It covered the typical needs for the family wash and along with this the machine was extremely simple to be use; only 3 commands were on the dashboard, the program selector, the start/stop button and the porthole opening button. On top of the machine there was a two compartments (prewash and wash) automatic detergent dispenser and on the front lower left corner there was the drain filter, a simple and sturdy washing machine, little bigger then an ordinary 5kg washer, with stainless steel top cover and the ability of being connected either to the cold water tap only or to both cold and hot water tap and most important the unique feature of the SA7, with respect to the professional 7kg washers of the time, that it didn’t need to be bolt to the floor. It had a modified version of the classic Candy balanced oscillating group, on which the friction pads were replaced by two 160N hydraulic shock absorbers and a spin dry stabilizer mechanism was added. This electromechanical mechanism would interrupt the spin dry lowering the drum speed in order to redistribute the laundry in case of severely unbalanced load and then restart the spin cycle again, it was a very effective solution that made the machine very stable and able to cope with any unbalanced load. The SA7 was also equipped with the classic Candy Autosolver system which add a dynamic soak cycle while the temperature of the wash water is raised to the desired point. The spin speed was of 550rpm which, considering the higher diameter of the rotating basket with respect to the classic 5kg washer, would correspond to a 700rpm of an ordinary home washing machine. The SA7 was conceived to be powered by both a single phase current or a 3phase connection and was available in the universal volt version. When the machine was connected to both a 3phase power and hot and cold water tap it could be used at the top performances which ensured shorter overall wash time. Being designed for a semiprofessional use a coin operated machine control was available on request so that the machine could be installed in public launderettes. The SA7 since the beginning proved to be very reliable and had a great success among big families and also where a big load capacity washer is desirable but the cost of a professional machine couldn’t be afforded such as in small restaurants or small hotels and communities. The SA7 had been sold for many years and it is the Candy machine model whose production line stayed active longer in the factory history; the machine had been manufactured without any major change or aesthetical restyling from 1967 until 1980 which is for sure a good achievement for a washing machine model. The only defect, if we can call it this way, is the small porthole which is exactly the same size as that of any other smaller Candy of her time which makes the loading of big and fluffy items a little intricate which however, once in the machine are handled easily thanks to the very big drum the machine is equipped with (especially if compared to the nowadays 7kg washers), in any case it didn’t prevent the SA7 from being a successful machine. I know of many small hotels and restaurants having a Candy SA7 still in use in the early 90s, this just to say that it really was very well made and designed, able to cope with an actual intensive use!
