I noticed there were very few, if any 'golden era' on-air video airchecks from the 90's of the '100,000 WATT BLOWTORCH OF SOUTH TEXAS' (thanks John Lisle and Steve Hahn for that coin), so here's my offering. T-Bone, Electric Deb and our fearless leader Virgil Thompson are all either heard or mentioned: we had a GREAT team back then! Kevin Vargas (the Head Outlaw) was doing the night show aka 'Outlaw Radio After Dark'.

The legendary south Texas rock radio station 99.5 KISS signed back on the air as a ROCK station in 1991. Fast forward to 1994 and we had moved to a nice corner studio, overlooking San Antonio from the 5th floor. CD's were still somewhat new, as were the protective gel cases whereby the entire cd and case was loaded into the player. It was the dawn of the 'digital age' (I believe our new digital multi-track recorder was barely six-months old), so a ton of stuff was still being recorded in the old analogue fashion. This was my first radio gig, I was doing overnights and, as evidenced by the audio, still quite green. Looking back, I had all the attitude, but talent that hadn't quite evolved.

Every night, we did a 3 a.m. 'What The Hell Am I Doing Awake At This Hour' hour. This video starts at around 2 a.m., with a quick studio tour and a few raw call-in's from listeners. Back in the 90's, before the planet had a phone always an arm away, and texting didn't exist, a successful radio station had listeners calling literally 24/7!

My second to youngest son, Javen (still a proud Alamo City native) sent me some raw video and I edited it for human consumption (thanks kid!). I hope you enjoy this small bit of audio history from the Heavy Metal Capitol of the World, San Antonio, Texas and 99.5 KISS!
