Meet Lily of the Lighthouse, who is fishing for a new ocean adventure. Over the last few months, creative Artist Mairead Brennan has been very busy filling the aquarium with some new fantastic marine murals and updating some of the pieces which have lived in the aquarium since 1999, including Lily, who can be found living at the top of the lighthouse.

Restored by Mairead, Lily has been returned to her former glory, and placed on watch, looking out over the rockpools. She has been dressed for all weather conditions, and given a fishing rod for reeling in some tall tales.
To launch the new murals that Mairead has been working on and to celebrate Lily’s 25 years at the aquarium since it opened in 1999, staff are looking for some new ocean and river stories, to bring Lily's character to life. The competition is open to children from 7-10 and 11-13 years of age. Stories can be based on an ocean or river themed adventure and can be submitted in English or as Gaeilge. Stories can be up to 1000 words, and should be submitted to the aquarium by the 22nd of March, along with the participants' details.

The winning pieces will be brought to life with artwork by Garry Kendellan from Galway Atlantaquaria, and will be displayed at the aquarium and made available through the aquarium website.

Winners will also receive a 50 euro book voucher.

Additional Information about Artist Mairead Brennan

From a very young age, Mairead displayed her artistic talents, winning several regional and national art competitions. She graduated from Limerick College of Art & Design in 1991 with a first-class honours degree in Graphic Design/Visual Communications.
From there she won a scholarship placement with The Crafts Council of Ireland, based in their HQ at Kilkenny Design Yard, where Mairead worked as graphic designer for The Crafts Council themselves and other creative craft workers who were setting up in business. Soon after, Mairead joined BFK Design Group in Dublin, one of Ireland's most prestigious and successful Design Houses. In her eight years there she quickly climbed the ranks to Creative Director, working with some high profile companies and government bodies, including The Revenue Commissioners, Irish Life, Bórd Bia, Jacobs, Bewley's, The Department of Health, to name but a few.


Manannán Mac Lir
During her time in BFK Mairead designed the iconic 'Slí na Sláinte' signage for The Irish Heart Foundation, which has been adapted nationally and internationally and is today spotted in parks and walkways throughout the world! She has also worked as a commissioned illustrator for Consumer Choice Magazine during her time in Dublin and for many years later.

The rules of the Competition will be strictly applied.
Categories
The age category is determined by the age you are on the deadline for submission. I.e. your age on the 22nd March 2024.
Subject
We'd like you to enjoy writing your story, you can do anything provided it has a clear link to the ocean or river environment.
Length of Story
1000 words Max
Originality
Your work should be original and done by yourself with no assistance.
How to submit entries
Entries should be submitted in Word format, and saved with the Name Of the Story and the child's name.
Please print the following information (IN BLOCK CAPITALS) in the WORD document.
Name, age, home address, home telephone number, date of birth
Category and title of entry. (7-10, 11-13)
All entries shall be the property of Galway Atlantaquaria, who shall also be the owner of the copyright.
Galway Atlantaquaria will not accept liability for loss or damage to any work submitted.
Number of Entries
One entry per child is permitted.
Publicity
Winning stories together with the winners' details (name, age, or town) may be used in publicity campaigns where winners' parents/guardians have given their full consent.
Judges
There will be three judges.
Judging Panel
The decision of the Judging Panel is final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding that decision.
Competition Prizes
There will be two prizes in each category: for first and second place. (Prizes are non- transferable)
