Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone was born on 16 August 1958, in Bay City, Michigan USA, of Italian (father) and French-Canadian (mother) descent. Under her professional name of simply Madonna, she is a singer and songwriter, actress, film director and producer, as well as an author, but certainly best known as the highest-selling female recording artist of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, having reputedly sold more than 100 million albums worldwide.

Madonna was educated at Rochester Adams High School, and then attended the University of Michigan on a dance scholarship, and also took ballet lessons. Madonna was performing as a backup singer and dancer on Patrick Hernandez’s world tour when she was discovered by the record producer Mark Kamins, and signed to Sire Records in 1982. She released her debut self-titled album and two hit singles ‘Everybody’ and ‘Burning Up’ under their label the following year, both of which peaked at #3 on the Billboard chart.
