Ethereum has transitioned to the very much anticipated Ethereum 2.0, but many people were left wondering what this transition, or "the merge", as they'd called it, actually means.

Ethereum is the second biggest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap, after only Bitcoin, and therefore, the biggest altcoin out there. With a huge ecosystem consisting of tens of thousands of projects and applications running on its Blockchain, Ethereum is without a doubt the most used blockchain at the moment, sitting at the peak of the crypto industry.

The Ethereum founder, Vitalik Buterin, had announced the transition to Ethereum 2.0 since way back, before 2020, and most crypto enthusiasts had been impaciently waiting for it to take place. In early 2022, the Ethereum team decided to stop using the "Ethereum 2.0" terminology, as it had apparently created confusion among users, and instead adopted a new term for referring to the much anticipated upgrade: The Merge.

In the simplest of terms, the merge supposed Ethereum's transition from a proof-of-work consensus mechanism to a proof-of-stake algorithm, thus terminating once and for all the energy-consuming mining from the Ethereum ecosystem. More than that, the merge is meant to help Ethereum in terms of scalability and transaction fees, laying the ground for a bright future in the blockchain's life.
