A reconstructed ancient Egyptian prayer to Atum, recited in Medu Neter and drawn from the Pyramid Texts of King Neferkare.
English:
Prayer to Atum
O Atum, you who came into being high on the hill of creation with a blaze like the Phoenix in the Benben Shrine at Heliopolis
You sneezed forth Shu,
Coughed out Tefnut;
You put your arm round about them, like the arm of a Ka;
And your Spirit was in them.
O Atum, put your arm thus about King Neferkare,
About this work, about this pyramid, like the arm of a Ka,
So that the Spirit belonging to king Nerferkare be in him,
Enduring for ever and ever.
O Atum! Place your protection over this King, Neferkare.
Over this pyramid over this work of King Neferkare
Let no evil happen to him for ever and ever
Just as you gave your protection to Shu and Tefnut.
O great Ennead in Heliopolis-
Atum , Shu, Tefnut, Geb, Nut
Osiris, Isis, Nephthys and Seth-
Children of Atum, stretch out this heart to his child
In your Name of the Nine Bows, the Stretched Ones
Let the King turn from you and toward Atum
That Atum protect this King Neferkare
Protect this pyramid of King Neferkare
And protect this work of his
From the hands of the gods, from the hands of the dead,
And keep evil from him for ever and ever.
O Horus! This King, Neferkare, he is Osiris!
This work, it is Osiris! This pyramid, Osiris!
Reveal yourself to him!
Be not far from it in its Name of Pyramid,
Completed and great in your Name of Kemwer.
Thoth has placed the gods under your jurisdiction, healthy and just,
In the forts of Dedja and Demaa
And Horus is your father, Osiris,
In his Name of Iyty. He who Comes.
Horus has given the gods to you,
He has made them mount on stone steps
To brighten your face in the Palace of Scepters
