DESCRIPTION
In this episode we follow the prophet Isaiah as he confronts a frightened King Ahaz of Judah during a moment of national crisis around 735 B.C. Two northern kings — Rezin of Syria and Pekah of Israel — have formed an alliance and are marching toward Jerusalem to depose Ahaz and install a puppet ruler. The king inspects the city's water supply, already imagining siege and famine, when Isaiah arrives with a direct divine message.
Isaiah instructs Ahaz not to panic and assures him that the planned invasion will not succeed, but the prophet makes the condition clear: the city's survival depends on the king's faith, not his own schemes. God invites Isaiah to ask for any sign as proof of protection, but Ahaz refuses to request a miracle, choosing instead to appeal to Assyria for help. Isaiah recognizes this as a fateful decision and warns that inviting Assyria will bring longer-term calamity for Judah.
Despite Ahaz's refusal, God gives a sign: a child will be born and called Immanuel, "God with us," and before that child knows right from wrong the threat from the two kings will pass. Isaiah also announces harsher consequences: Assyria will bring judgment like a razor, the land will be devastated, and survivors will live on curds and honey. The prophet gives his own sons symbolic names — Shear-Jashub (a remnant shall return) and Maher Shalal Hashbaz (the spoil speeds) — which serve as living signs of coming events.
Isaiah records this warning for witnesses and prepares a small circle of disciples to preserve the testimony through the coming hardships. Though God appears to be hiding his face from the house of Jacob, Isaiah states his resolve: he will wait for the Lord and continue to teach. The episode closes with Isaiah and his children portrayed as ongoing signs and portents in a nation on the brink.
