On May 22, 2024, the Vancouver Public Library hosted a conversation with Jasmine Chen, Derek Chan, and Anjela Magpantay about the new rice and beans theatre production, Jade Circle.

Jade Circle is a multidisciplinary performance in Mandarin and English performed by Jasmine Chen. Jasmine is a second-generation immigrant who has lost her mother tongue through cultural assimilation. After the death of her grandmother, she recalls the fragments of Taiwanese children’s songs she was taught as a child. Feeling the loss of being unable to connect with her grandmother while she was still alive, Jasmine begins her journey of relearning Mandarin.

Join playwright and performer Jasmine Chen and director Derek Chan as they discuss the process of creating and staging this multilingual work. The talk has been arranged by rice & beans theatre, and will be facilitated by Anjela Magpantay. Jasmine Chen is a second-generation Taiwanese-Singaporean immigrant and multidisciplinary artist based in the unceded lands of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations and T’karonto (The Dish with One Spoon Territory). Jasmine has worked extensively as a performer in Theatre, Film/TV, and Voiceover. She is also a director, educator, movement coach, community facilitator, and producer. Jasmine has engaged with audiences across Turtle Island in repertory festivals, independent theatres, immersive experiences, regional theatres and outdoor venues. She has worked with leaders in film, opera, music, theatre, and media, such as: Atom Egoyan, Lido Pimienta, Hawksley Workman, Ins Choi, Aria Umezawa and Amanda Parris.

Derek Chan (陳嘉昊) grew up in colonial Hong Kong, studied in Norway, and currently lives and works on the stolen and ancestral lands of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations, colonially known as Vancouver. Derek received his BFA in theatre performance from Simon Fraser University. A playwright, director, performer, translator, and producer, Derek has been co-artistic director of rice & beans theatre since 2010. He has also worked with Playwrights Theatre Centre (artistic director apprentice), Vancouver Asian Canadian Theatre (associate artistic producer), and the rEvolver Festival (guest curator).
