Background

Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu, the last ruler of the Khwarezmian Empire, controlled a vast region that included modern-day Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and parts of Afghanistan. In the early 13th century, his empire clashed with the rising power of the Mongol Empire.

Initial Conflict

The conflict ignited when the Khwarezmian governor of Otrar, suspecting a Mongol trade caravan of espionage, executed its members and confiscated their goods. Genghis Khan, leader of the Mongols, sent envoys to negotiate, but they too were killed. Enraged, Genghis Khan launched a full-scale invasion of Khwarezmia in 1219.

Battle of Parwan

In 1221, after suffering several defeats, Jalal ad-Din Mingburnu managed to regroup his forces. Near Parwan, north of modern Kabul, Afghanistan, he achieved a significant victory against a Mongol detachment led by Shigi Qutuqu. This victory temporarily bolstered the morale of the Khwarezmian forces and demonstrated Jalal ad-Din's tactical brilliance.

Battle of the Indus

Buoyed by his success at Parwan, Jalal ad-Din prepared to face the main Mongol army. In November 1221, Jalal ad-Din and Genghis Khan met at the Battle of the Indus. Severely outnumbered, Jalal ad-Din fought valiantly but was ultimately defeated. The battle took place near the Indus River. As his army crumbled, Jalal ad-Din famously fled by swimming across the river, while his family members were captured or killed by the Mongols.

Aftermath

Despite his escape, Jalal ad-Din's kingdom lay in ruins. He spent years wandering, attempting to regroup and reestablish his rule. He fought in various regions, including India and Persia, but could never rebuild his empire. Nevertheless, his resistance is remembered for his bravery and tactical skill against the overwhelming Mongol forces.
