It’s a dramatic portrait lighting look at lends itself perfectly to dance photography as well as advanced creative lighting techniques and it can all be done with a single flash or with an optional second flash to control the shadow detail.

Photographer Gavin Hoey will guide you through everything you need to know to make super sharp beams of light from a single flash. As Gavin demonstrates, a bare flash doesn’t cut it and although adding barn doors helps clean up the beam effect, it lacks clean edges.

The Flashpoint AK-R21 Projector is a small but mighty projector that attaches to the front of a Speedlight or eVOLV200 flash. This is how Gavin gets the stunning sharp beams of light in his small home studio. He then adds some smoke and elevates his studio light as high as possible before completing and dance photo session with a difference.
