Fluid dynamics is a subdiscipline of fluid mechanics. It is a vast subject in itself and influences a great majority of areas. Did you know that a simple exercise of mixing milk into iced coffee is related to big cosmic events like supernova explosions? They both are governed by Rayleigh-Taylor instability which explains the instability of the interface between two fluids of different densities.

We come across various such seemingly normal yet extremely complex instances in our day to day life. For example, Plateau-Rayleigh instability is observed in inkjet printers for printing where a stream of ink is divided into droplets and focused on a piece of paper for printing.

Fluid dynamics thus influences, and explains numerous phenomena from the forces on an aircraft, flow of fluids around objects and even nebulae in space as well as the detonation of nuclear weapons.

The problems in fluid dynamics are solved by equations formed from various conservation laws and an assumption of the fluid as a continuum. The equations governing the fluid systems and their solutions can be simplified in various ways by using computational fluid dynamics.

Computational fluid dynamics is a branch of fluid mechanics that solves the problems in fluid flows by the use of numerical analysis and data structures. Calculations of fluid flow and interactions of liquids and gases can be performed easily by defining the boundary conditions. With high-speed supercomputers, better solutions are obtained easily. So, computational fluid dynamics is used in various areas and helps us understand the world around us better by using various software to analyse fluid behaviour.
