I met a friend outside his office. We were going out for a beer. He had a deck of empty index cards with him. I asked why. "Long story" he said. He was about to throw them away when he turned to me and asked jokingly if I wanted them. I had never owned an index card, let alone a whole deck of them before and they looked intriguing, so I said yes and kept them. We drank our beers and when I got home, I sat down at my kitchen table. I took one index card out of the deck and looked at it and wondered what to do with it. I got an idea. I wrote the name ”SOPHIE” with a black marker pen. Capital letters. It looked grandiose. Maybe a bit dramatic but indeed grandiose. Now I had an index card with the name ”SOPHIE” written on it. Who was Sophie? I wasn’t sure. I wondered if I knew anybody with that name. I concluded that I didn’t.

Maybe I should try to find a girl named Sophie, I thought.

Yeah, I liked that idea.
