For a condition with so many debilitating, even disabling, symptoms, POTS must be caused by something. In this talk, Patrick Ussher makes the case for regarding POTS as stemming from a neurological problem which primarily affects the limbic system, following an event perceived as 'traumatic' (e.g. a viral illness) by that part of the brain. It is argued that limbic system impairment can explain the key finding in POTS research to date of NET protein deficiency which is the primary reason why the POTS patient's heart rate increases so dramatically upon standing. Finally, it is considered what biological and neurological healing needs to take place in order for POTS Syndrome to be treated effectively.

About the author: Patrick Ussher himself had POTS but recovered by following an intensive six month rehabilitation program called The Dynamic Neural Retraining System, which was originally developed by Annie Hopper to treat 'multiple chemical sensitivity', but has since also had noticeable success with POTS patients (thereby pointing to a shared neurological origin in the limbic system in the case of both conditions). Having recovered, he set about mapping the idea of limbic system impairment onto pre-existing research into POTS to see if the idea of a brain impairment could explain those findings. This talk, and the book on which it is based ('POTS: What It Really Is & Why It Happens'), are the result of this research.
