There are six main factors that affect the acidity of a proton in a molecule. All involve how the charge of the conjugage base (more common) or acid (less common) is stabilized. The six factors are (1) the size of the charged atom, (2) the electronegativity of the charged atom, (3) inductive effects, (4) resonance, (5) hybridization, and (6) hyperconjugation. While these factors are important for predicting acidity, they are also very useful for predicting the outcome of any reaction that involves charged intermediates.
